Answer (Resolution)

In order to participate in the 1940 U.S. census project, you will need to install the indexing program and create a FamilySearch Account, which will be used to sign in to the indexing program. Instructions on how to do this are below.

 

1. Open a web browser (for example, Internet Explorer), and navigate to the site:

http://the1940census.com/

2. Click the Download the Indexing Software button.

3. In Internet Explorer, select Run to start downloading and installing the indexing program. (If you are using Firefox, select Save, and then double-click on the Indexing_windows_3... program to launch the install.)

 

If you see a security warning ("The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"), click Run.

4. Click Next > on the setup screen to start the installation of FamilySearch indexing. When the installation is complete, leave the checkmark in the box next to "Run FamilySearch Indexing," and click the Finish button. If you get a message asking you to restart your computer to complete the setup, go ahead and restart.

5. On the Sign In to FamilySearch indexing screen, enter your FamilySearch Account user name and password to sign in. If you do not have a FamilySearch Account yet, select Register for a New Account.

5a. If you selected Register for a New Account, you will be taken to a Registration screen. Select the radio button next to FamilySearch Account. Enter the requested information (first and last name, display name, gender, user name, password, and e-mail address, followed by the letters in the picture), and click Register.

 

Note: Your password will need to be a minimum of 8 characters long and must contain at least one number.

5b. An activation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you provided. Log in to your e-mail account. Then open the e-mail from FamilySearch Account Activation, and select the activation link.

6. Next, open a web browser (for example, Internet Explorer), and navigate to the site:

https://indexing.familysearch.org

Once there, select the Sign In link in the upper right corner.

 

Enter your user name and password, and click Sign In.

 

Verify that your information is correct, and then click Sign Out.

 

 

 

 

 

7. To start the FamilySearch indexing program, look for the FamilySearch indexing icon on your desktop, and then double-click it to start the program.

 

8. If you are starting the indexing program for the first time, you will see a Profile Information screen, where you will need to select a group.

Select the radio button next to Another Group, and then scroll down the list until you see your society's name, and select it*. Enter your phone number, and click OK to continue.

 

*If you do not see your society on the group list, contact FamilySearch Support at:

https://www.familysearch.org/help/contact

Please provide Support with the following information: 

  • Your society's name.

  • Your FamilySearch Account user name.

  • Request to be added to your indexing group.
