Symptoms (Problems)
  • I cannot remember my user name or password.
  • I forgot my password and username
  • I keep getting the message: "Invalid user name or password" when I try to sign in.
  • How can I retrieve my user name?
Answer (Resolution)

If you have forgotten your password, follow these steps to recover your LDS or FamilySearch Account username or to reset your password:

Follow either of these steps to get help on your account:
From the FamilySearch home page at, click on Get Help (upper right corner). On the Help Options pop-out panel, click on the icon that looks like a monitor with an arrow. (upper right)   From the Indexing home page at, click on the Tree, found in the lower right corner of the web page.

Then on the FamilySearch Support screen, click Account Support in the lower right corner.

Alternatively, you can go to and proceed to the next step.

On the LDS Account page, select either: I don't know my username for a forgotten username or I don't know my password for a forgotten password.

When you select I don't know my username, the page will expand to offer you 3 options for recovering your username.

  1. Mobile Phone. Select this option, and you will be asked for the mobile phone number and country that are associated with your account. If you didn't associate your mobile phone number with your account, this option will return an error. If your number is associated with your account, a text will be sent to your phone that has your username. Standard text message rates apply. This option is currently available only in the United States.
  2. Email. Select this option, and enter the email address that is associated with your account. An email will be sent to that address containing your username.
  3. Membership Record Number (MRN). You are redirected to a new page. Click I don't have or remember my e-mail, and then enter your MRN and birth date. The program will display your username.

  • If you registered for an LDS or FamilySearch Account with an e-mail address that you share with other people, the verification e-mail you receive from the recovery process will show the user names of all the people that registered with the shared e-mail address. When signing in, take care to use the correct user name that belongs to your account.
  • Those with LDS Accounts who registered without an email address or have forgotten it can select the Membership Record Number (MRN) option, and then enter their full membership number and date of birth to retrieve their user name through the program.

FamilySearch accounts require the patron to register with an e-mail address or mobile phone number. Either the e-mail address or phone number associated with the FamilySearch Account must be entered when trying to recover a username.
  • To change your e-mail address, see document 106498.

When you select I don't know my password, the page will expand and ask for your username. An e-mail or text will be sent that allows you to change your password.

A new page will appear giving you instructions that tell you how to proceed to recover a forgotten password.
