How to search the indexed states on the 1940 U.S. Census collection in Historical Records
Symptoms (Problems)
  • How do I locate and search just one state on the 1940 U.S. Census?

  • How do I determine if a state has been indexed?

  • How do I browse from one image to the next instead of searching the index?

  • Can I search for a specific entity such as a school, hospital, or nursing home?  How would I do that?

In the sample below, only the state name of Idaho was entered. Please observe on the left side of the screen is a list of counties. Scroll down to find the rest of the counties and a complete list of cities or towns.  To read more about enumeration districts within the cities, click https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/1940_Census_-_Enumeration_Districts.

When you have filtered to the correct locality, a list of enumeration districts will appear. Read the descriptions to help you decide which one might contain the names you are researching, or click on each district to browse the images. Use the arrow keys in the upper left corner of the screen to move from record to record, or key in an image number to jump ahead to a another record. The advantage to browsing images is it allows you to view neighbors and possible nearby family members.
