Restrictions on viewing an image in Historical Records
Symptoms (Problems)
  • Why am I still unable to view an image after signing in?

  • Why can't I view an image for a collection that has a camera next to it?

Answer (Resolution)

A camera icon signifies that there is an image attached to this record but does not specify that all users may view the image.  Subsequent screens will indicate the requirements for viewing and availability of the image.

On FamilySearch.org, all indexes are provided freely to the public; however, viewing of images is governed by the requirements of the record custodians (owners) for the collection.

Images on most collections can be accessed by clicking the View Image link; other images require that the user register and sign in before images can be viewed; still others are restricted to specific types of authenticated users. Many of these restricted images can be accessed from the family history centers.

Some collections are provided through partnerships with other genealogical entities, such as FindMyPast; in those cases, the indexes are provide free by FamilySearch, but images link to the partnership site, where they may be viewed for a fee. The messaging on the image placeholder will direct the user about which conditions apply.
