Online Help

The best way to improve your indexing is to carefully read the Field Helps, Project Information and Updates. The information in them gives you project-specific guidelines and suggestions.  In addition, the below resources can help answer your questions:

  • Take the tutorial lesson. If you are just getting started, work through indexing tutorial lesson 1 (you can find the tutorial at http://indexing.familysearch.org under the Help tab). Or from the My Work page, click Help.  In the drop-down box, click Tutorial.

  • Search the help file. If you have general questions, click F1 within the indexing program for a searchable help file.

  • Read the Project Instructions and Updates. When you start a new batch for a project you've never indexed before, read through the project-specific instructions.  Check the Updates frequently, since new information can be added at any time.  To find the Project Instructions and Updates, click here.

  • Use the Field Helps.  While you are indexing a batch, refer to the Field Helps to learn what information should be included for each field (you can find the Field Helps on the right side of the data-entry window).

  • Use the Share Batch Feature to have someone check how you are doing. Click here for information about sharing a batch. Click File and then Share Batch from the drop-down box.

Local Help

If you have questions that are not answered by the above helps, you can often find help locally. From within the program:

  1. Click the Help menu.

  2. Click Contact Support.

If you are a member of a local group, you should see your group administrator's name and contact information listed. Please contact him or her with any questions you have.

Note: For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the group administrator is the Stake Indexing Director. Community volunteers who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can request to be added to a local Stake Indexing Director's group. For indexers working on special projects with local groups and societies, the group administrator is set up by the society.
