How to search Historical Records by region, locality, or country
Symptoms (Problems)
  • I am not sure how to search for ancestors in certain areas.
  • I would like to choose by specific locality in my search for ancestors.
  • Can I choose to search by country or locality?
Answer (Resolution)

Search for your ancestors by region at the Historical Records  home page:

  1. To view collections in a specific geographical area or region, scroll down the home page to the Browse by location section.
  2. To view all collections, click on Browse All Published Collections.
  3. To view a specific geographical area or region, click on the desired location, for example United States, etc.

For example, if you are searching for a record in Alabama:

  1. Click on United States.
  2. Enter Alabama or shorten it to ala in the Search field, or click on Alabama from the list below.
  3. Scroll down, and click on the desired collection within the Alabama collections, for example Alabama, County Marriages, 1809-1950.

In the example below, note that there is a camera icon beside "Alabama, County Marriages, 1809-1950." The icon indicates that images of the records are available, as well as the indexed record.

When you click on Alabama, County Marriages, 1809-1950, a search page will appear.

  1. Enter your ancestor's details in the Search Collection boxes.

Click on Search, and a list of records where your ancestor appears as a parent, child, or spouse appears.

On the left side of the screen, you can:

  1. Refine your search further by First and Last Names, by Life Events, or by Relationships (Spouse or Parent). Or
  2. Filter your results by using the filters derived from the result data.

To view details of the record, click on the inverted triangle, or click on the name to open the record.

In order to view the image, click on View image.

  • To view the image of some collections, a sign-in is required.

  • Some images are available for viewing on our partner sites.
