Adjusting highlights in the indexing program
Symptoms (Problems)
  • How can I adjust the highlights so the data fields match the highlights on the image?

  • How can I change the color and intensity of the highlight?

  • How can I tell if my batch has highlights?

Answer (Resolution)

With each batch downloaded, and each image within a batch, highlights might need adjustment.

To adjust the FamilySearch indexing highlight grid to better match the fields to the image data:

  1. On the menu bar of the data entry screen, clickView.

  2. Click Adjust Highlights.

    3.  Move the cursor into the image area. A yellow grid of highlights with a thin red border should appear.

    4. Adjust the the highlights using one or more of the options below:

  • Adjust the small red boxes (anchor points) in the red border by clicking and holding the box while dragging to the desired place so the grid matches the area to be indexed.

  •  If the bottom red line is not visible, move the whole image up.  Scrolling over the edge of the image should change the cursor to a white hand. Use the hand to grab the image in a clear column that is NOT in any of the yellow areas, and then push the whole image upward.  Making the image smaller (for example, 37%) when adjusting the red boxes allows the whole image to be seen more easily.

Adjust all highlights at once Adjust a single a single box

  • Adjust all of the highlights at once by moving the cursor over one of the yellow boxes until the four-pointed arrow appears. Then click, hold, and drag to the desired location (the four-pointed arrow does not appear in the graphic). Or adjust a single yellow box or column of yellow boxes by moving the cursor over the black square that appears in the center of one of the yellow boxes (a white hand with a dashed square should appear). Click and drag to the desired location.

    To return to normal view:

  1. On the menu bar, click View.

  2. Click Adjust Highlights.

To adjust the highlights without going to View:

A.

  1. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys. (Found at bottom left of keyboard.)

  2. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the highlight up, down, left, or right.

OR:

B.

Use press and hold the Ctrl key, then move the mouse so that the cursor moves over the highlighted area.  Adjust as desired.

The color or transparency can also be changed as well as whether the highlight appears as a solid rectangle or as an outline. To make the changes:

  1. On the menu bar, click Tools.

  2. Click Options.

Note:  Not every project uses highlights; some use only the ruler. When highlights are not available, the drop-down menu has the highlight options greyed out. Look at the highlight icon on the tool bar.  If a drop-down box is displayed, the highlights work for that project.

When the project does not have highlights, using the ruler is an option.  See 105194.
